When you take the gears off, wrap the old timing belt around them to hold them in place while you impact them off. When I did timing belt stuff, I would always back the crank up a few degrees off of top dead center so no pistons are in danger of hitting valves should the cam spin. I think you are probably fine, put the belt and gears back together, and check your compression before you put the plenum, etc, back on.
